Air safety

Air safety (SoAS) is an integral part of the International Airport of Mykolaiv. The main purpose of SoAS activity is the creation of a precise organisational structure and a supporting system of air safety for the following:
  • The International Airport of Mykolaiv as a complex (inc. passengers etc.).
  • Airlines that are based at the airport.
  • Other air-related aspects based in supervised zones.
The SoAS also exists to sustain a regular and effective practice, and to supervise the enactment of Ukrainian legislative and normative rules. As well as this, it stands to oversee ICAO standards and procedures, concerning the protection of civil aviation against actions of illegal interference, and attempts to damage the economic integrity of the airport.
This implementation of aviation safety must be conducted with competence, respecting the safety of passenger and staff life, while they perform official duties.
The activity of the SoAS is carried out in interaction with other divisions of aviation safety at the airport, including law-enforcement and other enforcement authorities.

The primary tasks of SoAS at the International Airport of Mykolaiv are:
  • The maintenance and protection of aircraft, as well as the safety of passengers, crewmembers and aviation staff. The airport’s most important assets must also be guarded.
  • The enacting of this high level of aviation safety is carried out in such ways: -
    • Aircraft registered in the state inventory of civil aircraft, which lack relevant documents which entitle them to carry out industrial and commercial activity in the area of civil aviation, cannot take off.
    • Persons / Vehicles are not allowed to enter or drive into supervised or sterile zones, or into a zone with similar limited access, without a pass.
    • A person is not allowed to board without clearing security.
    • It is forbidden to take items and equipment aboard that have not gone through check-in and security, including hand luggage, baggage, cargo, and express / posting mail.
    • Juridical persons, aviation staff and other such persons, whose activity is connected with aviation safety, should have relevant identification.
    • Requirements and activities with regard to aviation safety must be in accordance with legislation operating in Ukraine. This includes normative documents, organisational-administrative documents of the airport, standards / recommendations of the International Organization of Civil Aviation and so forth.

The aviation safety course, completed by employees, ensures that they have a high level of education, as well as knowledge of most widely spoken foreign languages. They are also taught skills in respect to carrying out interrogation and checking passengers’ documentation, with the ultimate purpose of exposing potential threats to flight safety. All employees have passed this special training and are certificated according to both state and international standards.
Employees at SoAS use various pieces of equipment to combat crime, including metal detectors (Tetra), scanners, and introscopes (Linescan) as well as fully analysing passenger travel documentation, to determine their authenticity.
